Ruins and Fragments presented processes and artistic productions developed from activations of the Arquinho Factory in Guimarães during the first semester of 2023. The curatorial project sought to understand the narratives that this industrial ruin and its traces contain and provoke, considering its interstitial condition between past industrial use and the future rehabilitation project. The artists' responses to this inquiry encompass various languages — found objects, performance records, audio, experimental photography, and writing — primarily showcasing the procedural exhibition of fieldwork conducted in and around the factory. The artistic proposals focus on capturing the entropy of space, experimenting with the heterotopia of its anti-monumentality, and the dual act of inventing and inventorying, including, in some cases, decomposition and forgetting as intrinsic elements in the construction of the artworks.
This project is related to “Arquinho’s Takeovers” and the publication “Amidst the ruins and its fragments: Unveiling Arquinho Factory's transformation through intervention and assembly processes”.
