Scoring Entropies was developed as both a pedagogical mediation and an artistic practice experiment with students from the School of Arts at the University of Minho. Conceived within the course Space, Territory and Context, the workshop invited participants to engage the city as a shifting field of fragments, rather than a stable or monumental narrative.
The proposal centered on writing as a situated and relational practice, grounded in the materiality of the urban landscape. Inspired by Robert Smithson’s approach, walking became a method of composition. Instead of following predefined routes, students drifted through the city, allowing chance encounters with ruins, infrastructures, and overlooked elements to guide attention and generate meaning.
During a collective walk between the School of Arts and the Fábrica do Arquinho, participants were invited to inscribe the space through punctuation marks. Quotation marks, questions, ellipses, and exclamations were placed onto found situations, transforming fragments of the environment into speculative statements. Each gesture functioned as a micro intervention, a way of reading and rewriting the city simultaneously.
This expanded grammar turned writing into a spatial and embodied practice. The city became a surface for projection and listening, where perception, imagination, and material reality overlapped.
As an artistic experiment, the process unfolded beyond the walk itself, generating conversations, unexpected actions, and further translations into other forms, including poetic responses produced by participants. A poem produced by one of the students was latter exhibited at the Ruins and Fragments exhibition .
