The intricate urban fabric of Freixo, in Porto, is shaped by overlapping road infrastructures and industrial developments since the 19th century, defining a unique and challenging urban context. This Collective Mapping Workshop emerges as a response to the opacity of urban regeneration projects and the growing real estate pressure in the area, proposing a participatory approach to rethink the future of this zone.

By bringing together researchers and professionals from various disciplines, the workshop explored the potential of collective mapping as a tool to reveal the material, immaterial, and space-temporal layers of Freixo. Inspired by independent collectives using cartographic tools like Iconoclasistas (Argentina) and Bureau d'Etudes (France), the event seeked to democratize access to information and challenge hegemonic narratives. The process of collective mapping for Freixo comprised two complementary moments: a territorial analysis and the construction of schematic proposal synthesis maps. The initial rigidity of the approach model sparked valuable debates and reflections, exposing tensions and ambiguities present in the territory.

The three compiled diagnostics were collectively discussed, resulting in the construction of schematic synthesis maps. These maps, besides being accessible instruments for other stakeholders, represent a critical and shared vision of Freixo, highlighting strategies and tactics for its future appropriation.
