The essay synthesizes the discussions and results from Freixo´s Workshop , which explored the current state and potential future of the Freixo area, shaped by overlapping road infrastructures and industrialization since the 19th century. Initially deemed uninteresting, recent urban regeneration projects and increasing real estate pressure have brought attention to this neglected urban fabric. The Collective Mapping workshop, held in this context, addressed the challenges through collaborative mapping, combining research on unstable landscapes and diverse perspectives. The practice of collective mapping, employed by groups focusing on historical palimpsest, private involvement, and cultural vitality, emerged as a tool for critical investigation and intervention in urban spaces. The resulting maps, reflecting varied strategies from tourism promotion to private-public collaboration and cultural revitalization, serve as accessible instruments for shared knowledge. The proposals encompass pragmatic solutions and abstract considerations, navigating issues like tourism, heritage, accessibility, and citizenship. The text emphasizes the power of collective mapping in urban disciplines, drawing inspiration from independent collectives globally. It concludes by presenting three distinct group proposals for the Freixo area, envisioning a future shaped by cultural vibrancy, private-public partnerships, and an understanding of the region's historical layers.
